A city with 2,500 years of international history, Rome welcomes you on your nine-day program that explores multilateral cooperation and international law. In this global hub, you join a rigorous academic course led by a local expert, who takes you into the international institutions that write the rules of global governance—think the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Your study tour base is IES Abroad Rome Center, a renovated 1920s building on the banks of the Tiber. From there, you explore the structures, functions, and legal frameworks behind the EU and the UN, and still find time for a gelato or two.

Using Rome’s resident institutions as case studies, this course examines the structures, functions, and legal frameworks behind global governance. With a leading academic steering your learning and access to international organizations—WTO, FAO, WFP, and the World Bank—you give yourself a real-world headstart on your career in international affairs, law, or diplomacy.

In the nine days of your study tour, you have 12 hours in the classroom doing coursework and working towards a two-hour final exam. To enhance your classroom learning, you spend 8 hours visiting major international organizations based in Rome.
Cultural & SiteVisits
You take part in 2 cultural activities, visiting iconic historical sites with your classmates.
Rome today is a global hub for international organizations, giving the course leaders abundant options for ways to show you the reality of the institutions’ day-to-day functions through experiential learning.
4 site visits form this part of the course; the specific locations are confirmed nearer the start of the study tour. Most likely four of the following:
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
The United Nations’ specialized agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.
Esperienza Europa
The place to discover Europe and the European Parliament in an innovative, multimedia, and dynamic space in the heart of Rome. You learn about the EU and understand how it impacts European citizens’ daily lives. Through a multimedia tour, immersive installations, and an interactive role-playing game, Esperienza Europa gives you the opportunity to discover how the European Union works.
World Bank
A global partnership of five institutions, the World Bank works to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity by providing financial assistance and technical expertise to developing countries, aiming to raise living standards and promote sustainable development.
World Food Programme (WFP)
The world’s largest humanitarian organization saves lives in emergencies and uses food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.
World Trade Organization (WTO)
The WTO is the only international organization dealing with the global rules of trade. Its main goal is to improve the welfare of people around the world by ensuring that trade flows as smoothly, predictably, and freely as possible.

Housing Information
Hotel
You stay in shared accommodation in a city-center aparthotel, near Rome’s restaurants and cafés where you can sit with your study group friends to discuss the day’s learnings.
Your accommodation has a kitchenette, so you can cook at home when you’ve had your fill of gelato or want to try your hand at a Roman carbonara pasta and share a meal together on the terrace. You have WiFi, linens, towels, and housekeeping, so you just need to show up and dive into your learning experience in Rome.
*Housing is subject to availability. Alternative accommodation might be arranged, amenities and commute times may differ. For specific questions regarding housing, please contact SAF.

Many SAF staff are alumni and have walked this path. They have real-life experience to draw on as they advise and support you through every step of our comprehensive services. They’re in your corner, taking care of all the details and explaining what you need to do next.
Take the first step in your study abroad journey by scheduling a consultation with your closest Student Counselor. You can discuss your for-credit academic courses and language programs and explore internships, research programs, and study tours. When you know what you want to do, we guide you through the pre-program steps, help you arrange your visa and transport, and finalize your accommodation or digital experience.
